For 2008, the Touareg undergoes a "freshening-up", including refinements to its safety features and a more comfortable interior. The company officially calls it the "Touareg 2", although the number doesn't appear on the vehicle's badges. The base price of the V6 model is $1,550 lower than in 2007.
Named for a nomadic Sahara desert tribe, the Touareg comes with a 3.6-litre V6 or 4.2-litre V8, both with six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Both use 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive, with low-range gear and adaptive torque distribution.
Features on the V6 include 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals and tip-down function, power sunroof, rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, rear intermittent wiper, heated washer nozzles, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, floor mats, trip computer, CD stereo with SIRIUS Satellite Radio, heated "leatherette" seats with eight-way manual adjustment, 60/40 split folding rear seats, leather-wrapped tilt and telescopic multifunction wheel, power windows with key-opening function, and trailer hitch preparation.
The V8 adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic bi-Xenon headlamps with active control, fog lamps, power-folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory, power-latching liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, 115-volt power outlet, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 12-way heated leather power seats with driver's side memory, heated rear seats, ski sack, garage door opener, heated steering wheel, manually-operated rear sunshades, and Servotronic speed-sensitive steering.
The Touareg's refinements and its lower price sweeten the deal on this SUV, which is well-built, roomy and surprisingly capable when taken off the asphalt. New bolsters make the seats more comfortable, and new safety features include a new rollover sensing system and an ABS system that reduces stopping distances on gravel roads. Volkswagen has also announced that a new clean diesel will be coming in the Touareg, expected for the 2009 model year.
